When curtain shopping, there is so much choice that deciding what to buy can be a little overwhelming. There's plenty to consider, including fabric, length, style and colour. Here's our quick guide to choosing curtains for any room in your home.
Heavy fabrics such as linen, velvet and faux silk give a traditional and visually appealing drape, often used in living rooms and bedrooms. More practical options include synthetic and cotton blends that can be easily washed. Make sure your curtains are lined if you want them to keep in heat and keep out the light - essential for most bedrooms! For bathrooms and kitchens, a lighter material will be ideal, as you don't want thick, heavy curtains soaking up moisture and food smells.
The length of your curtains comes down to personal choice. Long curtains that hang down to the floor can look impressive and suit tall rooms, as well as make lower ceilings appear higher. Having the bottom edge of the curtain just above the floor gives a more contemporary look, whilst curtains that finish halfway down the wall are ideal for areas such as stairways and kitchens.
Your curtain fabric will fade over time, especially if in a window that gets a lot of sunlight. Vibrant, bright colours will often fade quicker, whereas neutral colours fit in with most decor schemes and fade the slowest. If you aren't keen on bold patterns or prints but don't want plain curtains, adding a contrasting border to the inner edge of the curtain is a great way to customise and update your fabric. You can then use matching tie backs and blinds to bring the whole window dressing together.
How your curtains attach to the rod or track can significantly affect the look and style of your window. Pleated or rod-pocket tops give a more traditional and classic look and allow you to add opulent swags and tails if wanted. Tab tops are easier to attach and give your curtains a much more modern and contemporary feel.
